For silent meal practice I enjoy the Beginning To Eat Practice ( I call it the 4 mouthfuls) that is in the chanting book. I realized today that I am practicing the Four Immeasurable Minds of Love! How skillful of Thay to offer this practice in such a simple, direct and concrete form .
With the first mouthful, I practice the love that brings joy ( Maitri / Love) With the second mouthful, I practive the love that relieves suffering (Karuna / Compassion) With the third mouthful, I practice the joy of being alive (Mudita / Joy) With the fourth mouthful, I practice equal love for all beings ( Upeksha / Equanimity)
According to the Buddha: "Whoever practices the Four Immeasurable Minds together with the Seven Factors of Enlightenment, the Four Noble Truths, and the Noble Eightfold Path will arrive deeply at enlightenment"
