Join Temple Buddhist Center in helping feed the hungry at the St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 2nd Saturdays of each month
 
Next volunteer opportunity: This Saturday, February 11, 2012, 9 am - 11:30 am (meet at Unity Temple at 8:30 am to carpool)
 
Join us as we help serve meals at St. Paul's Church, located at 1300 North 18th Street in Kansas City, Kansas. It's a great opportunity to serve as well as get to know other Buddhist practitioners. If you'd like to carpool, meet in the Unity Temple lobby at 8:30 am. The serving and cleanup will take until 11:30 am. Location of Next Week's Gathering

Next Monday, January 16th is Martin Luther King Day. Unity will be closed for the holiday, so we cannot meet there. Sue has invited us to meet at her home at 4447 Pennsylvania Ave, Kansas City, MO 64111. We'll meet at our usual time 7 pm - 9 pm. Please bring a cushion or bench if your prefer one. Sue has plenty of chairs.

Sue's home is 1 1/2 blocks north of Panera on the Plaza by foot. Since Pennsylvania Ave. is one-way south you must drive around the block as follows: head north on Broadway to W 44th St. Turn left on W 44th St then turn left again on Pennsylvania. Half way down the block on the left is 4447 Pennsylvania Ave. Look for the 25 mile an hour sign on your right and the house is across the street from the sign.

Sangha friend Teresa Coppage and her husband, actor Walter Coppage, are coordinating a service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Thursday January 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart at Rockhurst High School, 9301 State Line Rd, Kansas City, MO 64114-3299. Walter will read excerpts from a King sermon on "Love your enemies" and then there will be a guided meditation honoring our diverse American heritage. Cookies and fellowship will follow the service. Park in the lot to the south and enter via the south entrance on State Line (there are two driveways on State Line). The Chapel is immediately inside the door.

Monday, December 26th, 6:30 - 8:00 pm at Mudpie All Vegan Bakery and Coffeehouse, 1615 W. 39th Street, KCMO 64111. We'll enjoy tea meditation, flower watering and just being joyfully together! Please note we are meeting one-half hour earlier than usual.

Monday, January 2nd, 7 - 9 pm, Plaza Library, 4801 Main Street, KCMO, 64112. Bring your mat and sitting cushion or bench if you have them. Chairs provided. After sitting and walking meditation, we will recite the Five Mindfulness Trainings as we usually do.

Relics of the Buddha Tour Opening Ceremony Friday, December 9th at 6:00.  Our host, Janet Taylor and the Temple Buddhist Center, aspires to fill Charles Fillmore Chapel with 300 people practicing lovingkindness. Please lend your support!

Readings for Chan Huy Talk This Saturday

This Saturday we will gather at David and Bethany's for a morning of mindfulness with Br. Chan Huy via the internet.  Br. Chan Huy offers the following reading in preparation for the talk entitled "Mindfulness at Each Moment of the Day:

“Moreover, when a practitioner walks, he is aware, ‘I am walking.’ When he is standing, he is aware, ‘I am standing.’ When he is sitting, he is aware, ‘I am sitting.’ When he is lying down, he is aware, ‘I am lying down.’ In whatever position his body happens to be, he is aware of the position of his body.

“Moreover, when the practitioner is going forward or backward, he applies full awareness to his going forward or backward. When he looks in front or looks behind, bends down or stands up, he also applies full awareness to what he is doing. He applies full awareness to wearing the sanghati robe or carrying the alms bowl. When he eats or drinks, chews, or savors the food, he applies full awareness to all this. When passing excrement or urinating, he applies full awareness to this. When he walks, stands, lies down, sits, sleeps or wakes up, speaks or is silent, he shines his awareness on all this."

We will also enjoy reading together "Decompartmentalization" from Peace Is Every Step as well as another guided meditation focusing on mindfulness of the body from the Blooming of a Lotus.

12/3 Next Internet Talk with Br. Chan Huy

Please join us on Saturday, December 3rd for a Morning of Mindfulness with Br. Chan Huy, "Mindfulness in Every Moment, Everyday." We'll gather at 9:45 am at Bethany and David's home.  Their address is in the RSVP link.  After the talk ends at noon, we'll recite the 14 MTs and enjoy a potluck lunch.  Please tell us what you are bringing in the comment section of the RSVP.
